Getting Ready for Your Ear Appointment? Here's what You Need to Know
We're so glad you've chosen us to take care of your ears. Before your appointment, we want to make sure you're all set. Don't worry—it's a simple process, but a little prep can make it even smoother.
Here’s what you need to know:
Softening Things Up
To get the best results from your ear treatment, it's super helpful to soften up any wax that's built up in there. For the week leading up to your appointment, use some olive oil .We recommend earol, available from most supermarkets, pharmacists or online. Just pop a few drops in each ear, twice a day up until the day of your appointment. This helps loosen the wax and makes it easier for us to remove.
There are 3 methods of earwax removal.
The type of treatment used will be based on an assessment including inspection of your ears, review of your medical history and your preference will be taken into consideration. If ear wax is stubborn or difficult to remove a combination of treatments may be required.
We expect your appointment to take approximately 30 minutes.
Ear irrigation is quick and straightforward, but it’s always good to know what’s coming. We’ll be using warm water to gently flush out the wax from your ear canal using a small hand held device attached to a specialised medical water pump. It might feel a bit strange—like having water in your ear after a swim—but it shouldn’t be painful. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, just let us know and we’ll adjust.
Microsuction is considered the gold standard as it has fewer side effects as te ear canal is kept dry. It involves inserting a small tube into your ear canal attached to a gentle suction machine designed for safe removal of ear wax. It may feel a bit noisy and a bit cold but shouldn’t be painful and if you are experiencing discomfort let us know at any point and we can adjust for you.
Manual Removal If the earwax is close to the entrance of your ear canal we can use specially designed forceps to remove the ear wax.
Before your appointment, think about how your ears have been feeling lately. Have you had any ear pain, infections, or recent surgeries? If so, it’s important to mention this when you book your appointment. We want to make sure ear wax removal is the right choice for you, and sometimes a different approach might be recommended such as seeing GP first.
